Tampa Bay Couples Counseling

Marriage Counseling in Tampa

Marriage counseling in Tampa is a series of sessions, usually weekly, usually fifty minutes to an hour, with both partners in the room. It suits couples stuck in the same argument and couples deciding what comes next.

What it costs

Marriage counseling is paid per session at most practices, and what one costs here is not settled yet. When it is, the figure goes on this page rather than behind a form.

Three things account for most of the spread. A ninety-minute session costs more than a fifty-minute one. Advanced couples training can raise the rate. Video and office sessions are often priced the same.

Insurance rarely covers it anywhere, because plans pay for treating one person’s diagnosis and a relationship is not a patient. Some practices keep a few reduced-fee slots or a sliding scale, and not all of them advertise it, so ask on the first call.

Couples usually start with weekly sessions for a couple of months, so the total is the session price multiplied by eight to twelve, not one. Most practices bill session by session.

What happens in the room

The first session is mostly the counselor asking questions. Expect to be asked about your history together, the last few months, and what you each hope will change. No one has to win the argument in there, and the counselor will not pick a side.

Many counselors see each partner alone for part of the first few sessions. That is common practice and says nothing bad about either of you. People say different things when the other person is not listening.

After that, sessions follow a pattern the counselor will explain: some time on the past week and some time slowing a familiar argument down to see how it works. Some counselors also suggest something to try at home.

  1. Before. Each of you fills in a short intake form, separately. Most are short.
  2. The first hour. Both of you, the counselor asking how you got here, often with some time apart.
  3. The first month. Weekly sessions, then a check on whether it is helping and how often to keep coming.

What happens in a first couples counseling session

Does it work?

Decades of published outcome studies find that the majority of couples who complete counseling are better off than similar couples who do not. That is a finding about most couples, not a promise about any one couple.

The research is clearer about the months after counseling than the years after, and no study can tell one couple in advance how it will go for them.

Some couples leave counseling closer. Some leave clearer about separating well, and with less damage than they feared.

Who you would be working with

The people you would be working with are not named on the site yet. Their details go up once the practice has confirmed them.

When marriage counseling is not the right first step

Marriage counseling assumes both people can speak freely in the room and go home safely afterward. Where that is not true, it is the wrong place to start, and a counselor who works with couples should screen for it before seeing you together.

How to choose a counselor

Start by asking what training someone has and whether they hold a state mental-health license. Not everyone who works with couples in Florida does, and it is a fair question to put to any practice you call, including this one. We do not hold one, and the foot of every page on this site says so.

Then ask how much of their work is with couples. Seeing one couple a month and seeing twenty a week are different jobs, and the answer tells you more than a list of methods does.

On the first call, ask how their first few sessions usually go, what they do when one of you is keener than the other, and how they handle something one partner shares alone. A counselor who works with couples every week will have a ready answer to each.

Past a certain point, fit matters more than any of that. If the first session feels wrong to either of you, it is fine to try someone else. Switching is common.

You do not have to be married

"Marriage counseling" is what most people type, so it is the name of this page. It is the same work as couples counseling or couples therapy, and it is for couples who are dating, engaged, living together, co-parenting, or married, same-sex or not.

If you would like a counselor who shares your faith, or one who will leave faith out of the room entirely, both are ordinary requests. Ask on the first call.

If your partner does not know you are looking

That is common. A lot of people read about counseling for weeks before saying anything, to learn what they would be suggesting.

When you do bring it up, it tends to land better as something you would like to do together than as a verdict on the relationship. It also helps to have a name and a price ready, so the conversation is about a specific next step rather than an idea.

Evenings, weekends, and video

Finding an hour when two working adults are free at the same time is the practical obstacle. Ask about evening and weekend slots on the first call rather than after you book.

A video session keeps the appointment private from anyone who might recognize your car outside an office, and it means nobody arrives straight off the Selmon Expressway. If one of you travels a lot, ask how that is handled before you book.

Common questions

How much does marriage counseling cost in Tampa?
It is priced per session at most practices, and session length and training move the number most. Insurance rarely covers it. Our own fee is not published yet; when it is, it will be on the page rather than quoted only on the phone.
Does insurance cover marriage counseling?
Usually not. Insurers pay to treat one person’s diagnosed condition, and a relationship is not a patient. Check your workplace benefits too: some include a handful of free counseling sessions.
How long does marriage counseling take?
Two or three months of weekly sessions is a common start, followed by a review of whether to keep going, space sessions out, or stop. A counselor should tell you how they judge that.
What if my partner will not go?
You can still start. Some counselors will see one partner on their own first and invite the other later, and some offer a single phone conversation to answer the hesitant partner’s questions. Ask before you book.
Is it too late for marriage counseling?
Couples come at every stage, including after an affair and after one partner has talked about leaving. If one of you is unsure about staying at all, a short process called discernment counseling is designed for that. It helps you choose a direction, including whether to begin counseling.
Does marriage counseling work?
The research says it helps on average, with the clearest evidence for the months right after counseling. It is not a guarantee: results vary with the couple, the counselor, and the fit between them.
Can we do marriage counseling online?
Whether we meet couples by video is not settled here yet, and this page will say so when it is. Many couples do find video easier to schedule. If you share a small home, plan where each of you will sit so neither is overheard.
Will the counselor take sides?
Most couples counselors work with the relationship rather than with either partner. If you ever feel one of you is being ganged up on, say so. A good counselor will want to know.
Is what we say confidential?
Florida’s confidentiality statute covers licensees of the state’s mental health boards. We are not licensed by them, so it does not cover what you tell us, and you should know that before deciding what to say. Ask us directly how we handle what you share, and ask the same of any practice you call.
Do we have to be married?
No. The page says marriage because that is what most people search. The counseling is the same for any couple.
