Tampa Bay Couples Counseling

Couples Counseling in St. Petersburg

Couples counseling in St. Petersburg works much as it does anywhere: both of you in the room or on video, usually weekly at first. What changes on this side of the bay is getting there, and whether you would rather not cross a bridge at rush hour to do it.

When couples counseling is not the right first step

A marriage counseling practice serving the Tampa Bay area. We are not licensed mental health providers, and what we offer is not psychotherapy, a diagnosis, or medical care.

Ask what it costsWe'll tell you on the call, before you book anything.

This is a counseling practice rather than a directory. What we charge is not on the site yet, and it goes here rather than into a form when it is. Where we see couples on this side of the bay is not settled either, and this page says so rather than implying an answer.

What it costs in St. Petersburg

Pinellas practices do not all charge the same, and few publish a figure at all, which is most of why calling around is such a slog. Ask each one what a session costs and how long it runs before you book anything.

Insurance seldom pays for couples sessions anywhere, because it covers treatment of a diagnosis and relationship trouble on its own does not count as one. If a fee is a stretch, ask about a sliding scale on the first call. Some practices mention one without publishing the numbers.

Awaiting sign-off: what we charge for a session

Our fee goes here before the site goes live. This page quotes no figure until then, including other practices’ figures.

Who you would be working with

We do not name who you would be seeing yet. That waits until the practice has confirmed it.

Awaiting sign-off: the counselor list

No counselor is listed here yet

Who you would be working with is not published here yet. It goes up once the practice has confirmed it, and not before.

When couples counseling is not the place to start

Couples counseling assumes both people can speak freely in the room and go home safely afterward. If one of you is afraid of the other, start somewhere else.

Getting to a session on this side of the bay

Many St. Petersburg counseling offices are downtown, along the 4th Street North corridor, or in the office parks up toward Gateway. Downtown usually means metered street parking or a garage, so leave ten minutes for it. Offices farther north more often have their own lot.

If one of you works in Tampa, a 6 p.m. appointment in St. Petersburg means crossing the Howard Frankland or the Gandy at rush hour. Either pick an office on the side where the later of you finishes work, or do that session by video.

Coming from Clearwater or Largo, US-19 and the Bayside Bridge are the usual routes, and both slow down after five. An office in the north of the city cuts that drive short.

Parking near Central Avenue fills up on Saturday evenings, so weekend appointments are easier at an office with its own lot.

Awaiting sign-off: where we see couples, and whether we meet by video

The address we see couples at, whether there is one on the Pinellas side, and whether we meet by video are not settled here yet. All three will be on this page before the site goes live.

Video, if the bridges are the problem

Video is the usual answer when a bridge is the problem. A session taken from home costs nothing in drive time, whichever side of the water you are on.

Video suits some couples better than others. If one of you finds it easier to talk away from home, an office may suit you better. If the drive is what keeps getting in the way, video removes it.

Common questions

How much does couples counseling cost in St. Petersburg?
Ours is not on the site yet, and it goes here when it is settled. Prices around the bay vary widely and most practices will not publish one, so ask on the first call. Insurance rarely covers couples sessions, and some practices keep sliding-scale slots.
Are there evening or weekend appointments in St. Petersburg?
Ask about early-evening and Saturday times on the first call, and consider video for evenings when a bridge stands between you and the office.
Can a Tampa counselor see us if we live in St. Petersburg?
Plenty of couples on the Pinellas side see someone in Tampa, either by crossing the bay or from home by video. If the drive is the thing standing in the way, say so on the first call.
Does couples counseling work?
Across many studies it helps on average, though it is not a guarantee. Outcomes vary with the couple, the counselor, and how well the three of you work together, which is one reason to choose someone you both feel comfortable with.
Do we have to be married?
No. Couples who are dating, engaged, living together, co-parenting, or married all come for the same work.
Is this a practice or a directory?
A practice, and the site is its own. There is no roster of other people here and nothing is referred on. We hold no state mental-health license, and a session is not psychotherapy, a diagnosis, or medical care.
